Applying for a New SIM Card – Requirements and process
A SIM (Subscriber Identity Module) card is an IC chip that is used to communicate with a mobile device. SIM cards are created and sold by various networking companies. The process of buying a new SIM card is similar for all the mobile network companies in India. Users need to submit their valid identity & address documents when applying for a new SIM card. In this article, we will discuss the new SIM application process and requirements for Indian users.
There are basically two types of SIM connections: prepaid SIM card and postpaid SIM card. Prepaid SIM bill payments are made upfront in the form of recharges. A postpaid SIM, however, requires you to make monthly payments against the invoice amount.
Requirements for applying for a new SIM card
To apply for a new SIM card with a particular network, you will need an official identity proof, address proof and two or three photos of yourself. You need to have an Indian ID proof to be able to get a new Indian SIM card. A person can apply for a new SIM card only with his own ID proof and photo. It is not allowed to use someone else’s id or photo to buy a SIM card.
When applying for a new SIM connection in India, you can use one of the following documents as proof of identity.
- Aadhaar card
- PAN card
- Voter ID card
- Driver’s license
- Photo credit card
- Government issued college or university id card
- Government employee id card
- Arm’s license
- Photo ration card
Many of the above documents will have your address as well. But if you are providing an ID proof that doesn’t contain your address, you need to submit one of the following documents as proof of address.
- Ration card
- Electricity bill (not older than last 3 months)
- Postpaid phone bill (not older than last 3 months)
- Water bill (not older than last 3 months)
- Rent/lease agreement
- Vehicle registration certificate
- Income tax assessment paper
In addition to the identity proof and address proof, you also need to provide one or two self-attested photographs when buying a new SIM card.
Process of applying for a new SIM card in India
First, you need to decide which type of connection you want for your new SIM card, prepaid or postpaid connection. Then, you need to choose a network service from the ones that provide services in your area. Some popular mobile network service providers in India are Airtel, Vodafone, Reliance comunications, BSNL, Idea, Tata Docomo, Aircel, MTS, etc.
The basic process for getting a new SIM connection is more or less same for all these networks. In this article, we will discuss the new mobile connection process for Vodafone prepaid and postpaid connections.
Applying for a new Vodafone prepaid SIM card
Follow the steps below to apply for a new prepaid connection with Vodafone India.
Step 1: Visit a Vodafone store or retail outlet nearest to you. Click here to find a Vodafone store near you.
Note: Make sure to carry a valid id proof, an address proof, and two passport size photographs.
Step 2: At the store, choose a number from the available ones and fill in the Customer information form (provided by the store representative).
Step 3: Submit your form and documents and choose your prepaid plan to finalize the process.
Step 4: It may take one day for Vodafone to verify your documents. Then, you can call 59059 to verify and activate your new SIM card. After verification, your SIM will be activated in a few hours.
You can now start using your new SIM connection after an initial recharge.
Applying for a new Vodafone postpaid SIM card
The process for applying for a new postpaid SIM card is almost the same as for prepaid connection. You will need to submit the same three documents, your passport size photograph, address proof and photo id proof. Once you have these documents, you can follow the steps below to apply for a new Vodafone postpaid connection.
Step 1: Locate your nearest Vodafone store and visit there with your documents.
Step 2: Choose a postpaid number and fill in the Customer agreement form (the one provided by the store representative).
Step 3: Submit your documents and choose from the available postpaid plans.
Step 4: Vodafone will now verify your documents which may take up to 2-3 days. Once it is done, you will start getting signals upon inserting the SIM card in your mobile. Then, call 59059 to activate the plan. After activation, you can start using your SIM card.
You will receive monthly invoice statements based on your plan type. Kindly pay the bills on time to keep enjoying uninterrupted services.
You can use the same process for any other network SIM card including Airtel, BSNL, and Reliance.
Process of applying for a new SIM card Online
Some network services providers also allow you to apply for a new prepaid or postpaid mobile connection online. To apply for a new Vodafone SIM card online, follow the step-by-step process below.
Step 1: Visit Vodafone network online shopping portal shop.vodafone.in
Step 2: From under the shop category, choose Prepaid connection or Postpaid connection, whichever you want to buy.
Step 3: Enter your name, current mobile number, location and email id and click Submit.
Step 4: You will receive a call on your given number in one or two days for verification. After that, either you can visit the Vodafone store or one of their representatives will visit you to collect your documents and to get the application form completed. Your connection will be activated in one or two days.
The process is more or less same for all the other networks that offer online application facility.
