How to Cancel Netflix Account

There are times that you no longer require your Netflix account. It might be that it doesn’t fit your budget anymore, or you’ve found an alternative. Whatever your reasons why, it’s easy to cancel your Netflix account. However, depending on what you’re using to pay for Netflix, the steps will change. For example, cancellation from the website itself would be really different from cancelling from let’s say Google Play. Note that uninstalling the Netflix app does not cancel your subscription!

With that said, I’ll talk about the various methods to cancel your Netflix account. However, there are some things that you should take note of before pushing through with the cancellation.

How to Cancel your Netflix Account

If you’re going to cancel your Netflix Account, it’s actually easier than signing up. You can accomplish the cancellation through a couple of taps on your phone, or a couple of clicks on your mouse.

Cancelling your Netflix account is a double-edged sword. What I mean by that is there are both positives and negatives to doing it. If you’re using a 30-day trial account, there’s not much risk that comes along with cancelling your Netflix account. But if you’re a long time user, you might want to think twice.

Risks to Cancel your Netflix Account

I don’t mean it to sound alarming by using the word “risk”, however, there is a downside that you should be aware of before moving forward. You might already be aware of “grandfathered” pricing, but if you’re not, let me elaborate.

Companies usually change their pricing every couple of years. Usually, the price goes up. The company cannot raise your rates when they increase their rates. If you’ve signed up to a lower price before and the company raises their price, then you have grandfathered pricing.

With a grandfathered price, you most likely have a cheaper rate than everyone else. If you cancel your account, you are going to risk losing that cheaper rate. Once you try to sign up to Netflix again, you’ve got no choice but to stick to the new pricing. Still, it’s your choice to make.

Cancelling on the Netflix Website (Desktop)

Netflix does not beat around the bush if you want to cancel with them. You can’t cancel using the Netflix app, but you can easily cancel with the steps below:

  1. Go to the Netflix cancel subscription page by clicking here. Or you can go to
  2. You might need to sign in if you haven’t done so.
  3. You’ll immediately be shown the screen below. Be sure to read the disclaimers and get informed as to when your billing cycle starts and stops.
  4. Once you’ve decided to cancel your subscription, click on Finish Cancellation.
  5. You’ve cancelled your subscription!

As I’ve said before, Netflix lets you cancel easily without any hassles. However, Netflix does offer their Basic plan to you. If you’d rather switch to the basic plan than cancel altogether, I think that would be a better option. But what if you want to cancel on a mobile device?

Cancelling on the Netflix Website (Mobile)

It would be a slightly different UI experience if you’re cancelling on mobile. But the steps are the same in general. When cancelling with Netflix on the Mobile website, it doesn’t show you the offer to switch the Basic plan, though. I think it’s a plus but it’s a lost chance for Netflix to reel back their users.

Here’s an outline of what you need to do to cancel through the mobile website:

  1. Go to the Netflix cancel subscription page by clicking here. Or you can go to
  2. You might need to sign in if you’re not yet signed in.
  3. You’ll immediately be shown the screen below. Be sure to read the disclaimers and get informed as to when your billing cycle starts and stops.
  4. Once you have read everything, click on Finish Cancellation to end your Netflix account.
  5. Done!

And that’s how you can cancel on both UI experiences. Whether you’re on the Desktop or Mobile versions, cancelling just takes 1 button to do.

Cancelling on Google Play

You only need to cancel Netflix on Google Play if you used Google Pay (yes, that’s without the L). If you want to cancel Netflix account, here’s how:

  1. Navigate to
  2. In the left menu, click My Subscriptions.
  3. Next to Netflix, select Cancel Subscription.
    • If you don’t see Netflix listed as one of your subscriptions, then the Google Play account that you are signed in to is not the one paying for your Netflix subscription. Please repeat the steps above while signed in to the Google Play account that is paying for the Netflix subscription. If you can’t locate the Google Play account attached to your Netflix subscription, please contact Google Play for support.
  4. Select Cancel Subscription again to confirm.

Once you’ve completed the above steps, you will see a message stating You have successfully cancelled your subscription, and you will receive an email from Google Play confirming the cancellation. Your subscription will stop at the end of the current billing cycle.

Final Words

And those are just 3 of the ways to cancel your Netflix subscription. However, if you used other means to pay for Netflix, you’ll need to cancel through them. For example, if I used PayPal to subscribe to Netflix, then I’ll need to cancel through PayPal. There are helpful articles on how to do it though, and you’re never in the dark on how to do it.

Nevertheless, you’ve seen here how easy it is to cancel an account with Netflix. One of the things I really like about their cancellation process is that they have the courtesy of saving the preferences you have on your account. And not only do they save your favorites, they also save your watch list and profiles for 10 months. So if you’re scared that your information will be gone forever, don’t be! If only signing up could be this easy!
