Best Netflix Alternatives in India
Netflix has been making waves of new shows and it has started gaining traction in India. With shows like Stranger Things and The Crown, more and more people are tuning into this on-demand service. However, we can’t escape the fact that Netflix is probably the most expensive service in India right now. There are many Netflix alternatives that can get you that entertainment fix that you’ve been wanting, so I’ll be laying those out today.
But before we get into the Best Netflix alternatives, let’s do a quick Netflix review first. There are several factors to consider when talking about contenders and comparing it to Netflix. We will be talking about the Price, Accessibility and Content of the Netflix alternatives. Netflix is currently priced at 500 Rs for the basic plan and we’ll use that as a benchmark when comparing prices. There are also mobile options for Netflix and you can download shows to your device if you’re on the go. Like in my Philippines article, I really like alternatives that you can easily access, while at the same time having a lot of international and local options available.
With that said. let’s jump into the Best Netflix alternatives in India right now!
Hostar really amazes with the amount of content that it offers. Since it’s a part of Star India, you’ve got access to all those awesome shows and movies to satisfy your inner cinephile. Probably the best part that separates Hotstar from Netflix is that some of the shows are actually free to watch. You have options for watching Live News, local movies and local series for free.
The price is really a good deal. At 199 Rs a month or 999 Rs a year, Hotstar really overtakes the 500 Rs price of Netflix. In terms of accessibility, you can easily download the Hotstar app or you can go on the website to watch. If you’re a person that’s always on the go, you can download the titles that you want, and watch them at a later date. That feature is definitely a big plus in terms of convenience. Lastly, the content is top-notch if you’re looking to go local.
My only gripe with this service is the limited amount of international options, but it makes up for it by having the really good international options. Right now, it has Game of Thrones which is more than enough to get me sold to this Netflix Alternative.
2. Amazon Prime Video
Amazon is already a big player in India for the marketplace that it offers, but it’s also a contender in this list of the best Netflix alternatives because of Amazon Prime Video. More and more people are subscribing to Amazon Prime Video because of its exclusive shows like The Man in the High Castle and the amount of quality content that is available to you.
Going back to our Netflix review and comparison, Amazon Prime Video outshines Netflix in the price department. At 129 Rs per month and 999 Rs per year, its monthly price is less than half of what Netflix is asking for. If you’re on a tight budget, this might be an option for you to consider. In terms of accessibility, Amazon has actually made easy to watch Prime Video by bundling the app in their Amazon Fire TV boxes. You can also watch shows on your phone or tablet, the same as the others on this list. In terms of content, you’ve got a lot of international options.
A caveat of this streaming service is that it does not have a lot of local options, but Amazon is working to get more titles. In any case, Amazon Prime Video is still a great option if you’re looking to watch international shows. If you’re the kind of person that is always waiting for the next big Western series, then this streaming service is tailor-made for you.
Bigflix touts a very large collection of Bollywood movies, and it really means it. It has more than 10,000 movies for you to choose from and you probably won’t have the time to watch all of them. Basically, if you’re looking to bring a movie house into your home, you’ve come to the right place. It’s a streaming service that you can consider when you’re looking for Netflix alternatives, especially if you’re into movies.
In terms of price, BigFlix is actually reasonably priced. The Premium subscription is at US$ 1.99 which is about 140 Rs per month and gives you access to the full library. A premium subscription also allows you to download shows so you can watch them on demand. If you’re on a really tight budget, you can actually watch shows Free. However, you can only browse a limited library and watch mostly trailers. The Free option is good if you’re not yet sure if you want to get a subscription and you’re just checking your options. Lastly, in terms of content, it’s hands down one of the best.
The only downsides of this streaming service is that you’re somewhat limited to what you can watch. Of course having the ability to watch local shows is great, but it does not have that many international options. And with its focus on movies, if you’re more of the series kind of viewer, this streaming service might not be the best fit for you. However, if you’re a cinephile and you’re really into the local movie scene, this is the perfect fit for you.
Jio, which provides a very good 4G sim actually offers a Netflix alternative as well. JioTV is somewhat different to the Netflix model. Netflix focuses on the on-demand model where you can pick an episode or title and start watching, while on JioTV it’s like you brought your TV with you on the go. You can have access to more than 575 TV channels both live and on demand and that’s not even the best part.
The best part is that JioTV is absolutely free for Jio users. So if you’re subscribed to Jio whether you have a Prepaid or a Postpaid plan, you’ve got access to the wide array of entertainment options that Jio offers. Talking about accessibility brings about a lot of good points. With a lot of people being on their Smartphone than on their TV nowadays, it makes sense to put TV at your fingertips. Finally, if we’re talking about content, you’ve also got a lot of options available. From your favorite TV dramas to the action genre, there’s something for you and for everyone to watch.
However, JioTV does have its caveats. For one, you have to be a Jio user to start enjoying this. Though you can get a plan easily and cheaply, it might also turn away some people. Another caveat is that is JioTV can only be watched on a mobile device (their online portal is down as of writing). However, you can easily project what you’re watching to you’re TV using screen mirroring so it’s not much of a big deal. Despite all of this, JioTV is a very worthy opponent for Netflix due to the accessibility and massive library that it offers.
Last but definitely not the least is Spuul, which offers a amazing catalog of movies. Spuul allows you to have access to thousands of Bollywood movies whenever you want to. The streaming service operates mostly through the app where you’ll have a lot of viewing options available to you. In the app, you can adjust the quality of what you’re watching and you can even download it as you’re viewing it.
Spuul has both Free and Premium options. For the Free option, obviously it’s free but you are given access to a library of a few hundred movies. If you’re just looking to kill time by watching a movie while on your commute, the Spuul Free is great. However, if you want to be up to date with all the movies, then you can subscribe to the Premium option which is priced at US$4.99, around 350 Rs which gives you access to everything. There are sachets that you can purchase if you don’t want everything though. Accessibility is where Spuul really shines because it caters to almost everyone. Whether you want to watch shows on the go, or you want to watch it at home using Chromecast, Spuul lets you do it without any hassle.
The only caveat is that it’s the priciest in this list. If you’re not really a big movie aficionado, there might be other options. However, if you’re a really big Bollywood cinephile, this is best Netflix alternative for you.
Although I’ve only listed 5 of the best Netflix alternatives here, there are actually tons and tons of Netflix alternatives in India right now. You just simply need to explore, browse and discover a little bit. But don’t let that scare you. Most of the streaming sites allow for a 30 day trial or something to that effect so you don’t have to commit to start watching.
